Beginning in 1912, the Stampede is actually an offshoot of an earlier fair held by the Calgary and District Agricultural Society.  It wasn’t held again until 1919 to welcome home the soldiers from WWI.  And then starting in 1923, it merged with the Calgary Industrial Exhibition and became an annual event.

Since then, every July, the city of Calgary transforms into a Western town.  Store fronts and office buildings are decorated in cowboy themes, hundreds of events are organized including pancake breakfasts and Barbecues.  Even the residents get into the act and dress in western garb.
